What is home insurance?

Home insurance provides you with financial protection if something should happen to your property or belongings. This can include fire, theft, or even accidental damage – but what you are covered for will depend on the house insurance you decide on.

Buildings insurance

This covers you if the structure of your home is damaged. This might include the roof and walls, and fixtures and fittings.

Contents insurance

This covers you for loss or damage to personal belongings – in other words, anything that isn't physically attached to the buildings.

Aviva home insurance at a glance

Having the right level of home insurance matters. Here’s a quick overview of our house and contents insurance with Aviva:

  • Unoccupancy up to 60 consecutive days allowed to be away from home (i.e. whilst you are travelling).
  • Your contents, pedal cycles and collections are insured against all risks of physical loss or physical damage, both while at your home or while temporarily removed for up to 60 consecutive days anywhere else in the world, unless an exclusion applies.
  • Pedal cycles, including electric pedal cycles and pedal cycle accessories and parts – up to the sum insured specified (maximum £30,000).
  • We do not cover loss or damage to pedal cycles left unattended away from your home unless locked to a fixed structure or located within a locked building.
  • Maximum £5,000 cover for theft from an unattended vehicle. We will not pay for any loss or damage unless the vehicle is locked, windows closed and insured items are hidden out of sight.
  • We will pay for a covered loss whilst your home is being temporarily let for no more than 60 days in total per policy period.
  • Liability for Dogs (could be taken on trip).

Adding optional extras to your policy

You can also benefit from optional extras for your home and contents insurance, including:

  • Reduced risk of underinsurance due to data-driven rebuild values
  • Unlimited contents
  • Up to £100,000 cover for jewellery and fine art
  • Up to £30,000 cover for pedal cycles
  • Personal cyber cover (including social engineering)
  • Legal expense cover
  • Home emergency cover

Who might need home insurance?

House insurance looks different for everyone. How much cover you need depends on your living and property ownership circumstances. If you’re a homeowner, landlord, or you own the freehold to a property, you’ll likely need both buildings and contents insurance.

Most people are required to have building insurance as part of their mortgage agreement. If you need both building insurance and contents insurance, it can be cheaper and more convenient to purchase a combined policy.

If you’re a tenant or you own a leasehold flat but don’t own part of the freehold, you’ll likely just need contents insurance.

At Comfort, we can tailor policies to suit your circumstances. Whether you need home insurance for over 60s or first-time buyers, or something else, our team can advise you.

The importance of house insurance

With our Aviva home insurance, you can benefit from protection against possible financial and physical losses in your home.

Depending on your policy, you could be covered for:

  • Home
  • Contents
  • Your collections (art, jewellery etc.)
  • Legal liability and expenses
  • Home emergency
  • Cyber losses

The home and buildings section of the policy covers risks for your home, outbuildings and other permanent structures. The contents section covers risks for your general contents, such as clothing, electronics and appliances.

A breakdown of what our policy covers

Get a home insurance quote today and choose from a range of options based on your needs, property and lifestyle. Here’s a clear breakdown of what you could be covered for:

Buildings, contents, pedal cycles & collections

Your property, contents, pedal cycles and collections can be insured against risks of physical loss or physical damage during your policy period unless exclusions apply. This includes while you are at home and while you are temporarily away for up to 60 consecutive days, anywhere in the world.

Liability

This part of your policy can protect you against claims made against you. As a property owner, you have a legal responsibility to maintain the property to limit the risk of injury on your premises by a third party, such as a visitor. Damages may be paid where an insured person is legally obligated to pay for personal injury or property damage caused by an event covered by your policy. The liability sum will be the one stated in your schedule.

Personal cyber cover

You could receive payment where financial loss has happened due to cybercrime. This includes fraud, telephone hacking or identity theft, alongside other factors stated in your policy. See our policy documents for general definitions.

Please note that this home insurance policy is different to unoccupied house insurance, which is a policy that covers a house not lived in for 60 consecutive days or more, or not adequately furnished to be lived in properly. This is because homes in these circumstances are more at risk from theft or losses.

FAQs

Is house insurance a legal requirement?

While home and contents insurance is not a legal requirement in the UK, it’s highly recommended for homeowners and tenants as it can protect against financial loss due to damage, theft or other unforeseen events. If you have a mortgage, you may be required by your lender to purchase insurance on exchange and completion.

What affects the cost of my house insurance?

There are a number of factors that could affect the cost of your insurance policy, including the location of your property, its size and age, the materials used in construction, your claims history and your credit health. You will also need to consider how much cover you need.

Does working from home affect my insurance policy?

Most house insurance policies provide cover for remote working. However, if you set up and run a business from home, you’ll need to let your home insurer know, as a commercial insurance policy may be required. The best thing to do is to tell your insurer about your circumstances to avoid invalidating your insurance.

Are there any exclusions to your policy?

Exclusions on house insurance policies include the following:

Loss or damage caused by dishonest or criminal actsLoss or damage caused by faulty, inadequate or defective planningLoss or damage caused by intentional acts by you or a family member

How does home insurance differ to landlord insurance?

These policies can differ significantly. Landlord insurance covers risks related to rental situations, which aren’t covered in standard house insurance policies. If you’re not sure which type of insurance you need, get in touch with our team on 0208 9840 666 and they will be happy to advise.
